Attention 201 Designers

I’ve worked here: www.mideca.org for the past 2 years while finishing school, and need to find a fantastic replacement designer.  It’s a very nice part-time on-campus job and the designer will get tons of experience in web, print, and some motion design.  I’ve designed several websites for the DECA organization (as well as some affiliates), logos, flyers, business cards, banners, conference programs, brochures, a quarterly newspaper, and more (some can be found in my portfolio: nickwoods.us).

We’re only looking for one designer, and would like to find someone to start working sometime Fall semester so I can bring them up to speed on how to edit the website, etc, before I leave in December.  I thought it better to find someone in the 201 class so that they’d be able to continue improving the design and get more experience.  It’s a good supplement to the design education, and allows you to keep designing outside of classroom assignments.  The people here are very nice and it’s a fun place to work.

If anyone is interested, just send me an email:  nwoods1@emich.edu with resume and samples.

HBO

The making of HBO’s famous introduction, which lasted until the early 90s, I think… anyway, it’s pretty amazing… life before after effects…

Sign Painting

I recently came across this Flickr pool: Signpaintr As students venture out and try to document the vernacular I thought that this might be good inspiration.

Posters on Parade

Dear all,

There is currently a poster show hanging from my summer poster design class. it hangs right outside Ford Gallery. Half the work is silk screened and the other half is digital.

The three class assignments were given: 1. a poster about a modern typface 2. a poster about a community the designer belongs to and 3. a propoganda series of three posters about any subject each student wanted to discuss.

An opening recentpion will be held Thurs., Sept. 13 at 4 PM in Ford Gallery and that is open to the public.

Comments, criticsm, or hate mail about any of the work may be posted here.

Peace and Harmony,

Andrew

Helvetica the Film

poster.jpg

Helvetica the documentary, will be showing Wednesday, September 19, 2007 at the University of Michigan Art + Architecture Auditorium (room 2104) 8:00 PM – 11:00 PM. Cost: $5 donation at the door.

Helvetica is a feature-length independent film about typography, graphic design and global visual culture. It looks at the proliferation of one typeface (which celebrates its 50th birthday this year) as part of a larger conversation about the way type affects our lives. The film is an exploration of urban spaces and the type that inhabits them. Included are discussions with renowned designers about their work, the creative process, and the choices and aesthetics behind their use of type.

a summer workshop: book release & exhibition

this summer, along with my colleague amy fidler from bgsu, we created a non-profit and independent workshop that we titled SWEAT (summer workshop for experimentation and thought). our goal was to create an opportunity to make art and design over the summer in a setting outside of classroom constructs, although amy and i did function as the group leaders. we invited 11 current bgsu students and recent grads to join us in our endeavor. the results of the four week workshop was a 194 page book based on defining the graphic culture of toledo. the book is, at this precise moment, being self-published through lulu.com and we will be having a book launch and exhibition at artomatic 419 lite in Toledo on september 14 and 15. more details of the book launch to come.

below is a small sampling of pages from the book. and for background about the workshop, please visit http://www.sweatspace.com

Up and runnin’… sort of

Welcome to emugraphicdesign.com, the blog space created for student, faculty, and alumni of Eastern Michigan University’s graphic design program.

At this very moment it is nothing fancy, just good ol’ helvetica and a few dotted lines, the hope is that soon these pages will be filled with student work (in progress or complete), rants about graphic design, thoughts on education, thoughts on interesting things spotted on the web, good finds on youtube, and much more. Together we can create an online presence for EMU’s design program.

If you wish to be a contributor and are an alumni of the program or current design student not enrolled in one of my classes please don’t be shy and ask. Also, if anyone wants to take on the challenge and redesign the look and feel and functionality* of this blog please let me know, send me an email to mryan7@emich.edu or ryan.molloy@yahoo.com.

*no extra credit will be awarded to students who redesign the look and feel of the site.
