The art of handmade design

I picked up this book a while ago. I usually don’t have the money in my budget for these kinds of purchases but I couldn’t resist. Fingerprint, The Art of Using Handmade Elements in Graphic Design by Chen Design Associates is filled with really great photos and ideas for getting off of the computer to create design. I fnd this book really interesting and inspiring because I’m interested in doing more handmade stuff but I usually resort to the computer. You can have everything you need around you to create really awesome design, but it takes a lot more thought and creativity sometimes. The book includes anything from posters, web design, to product design from all sorts of designers and a little blurb about their work. It’s worth checking out.

Erica, that book sounds very cool. I think that you should bring it in on Tuesday to look at. I wish I would have known about that book for our Image Making project. I know that when I think of Graphic Design, I think of making stuff on the computer- I really don’t think about handmade things from what’s around me. I think that Ryan’s lecture on his first class kind of discourged me from the handmade stuff, because I don’t want it to be considered “Crafty”
Sorry to scare you Erica. I don’t think that hand made necessarily = “crafty”. So please make by hand all you want.
I was just using the word craft as making without questioning the process or purpose of making (which is what I define design as). Coming from architecture I liken crafting to things like brick laying or stone carving, in the world of print, it used to be the typesetter or printer who would just layout things on the page and print them. I think that craft manifests itself in all sorts of forms. There is digital craft as well.
So please make by hand, don’t think of it as being “crafty”. And it is a good book to look at. There is also another good book about posters made by hand techniques.
