IGG is looking for senior shows

I would like current EMU students to be aware that we are continually searching for seniors who would like to have a senior thesis exhibition. We have some time available still this semester and are actively looking for students who would like to have either a solo or joint exhibition. We are also budgeting for multiple senior shows next semester so please get your applications in early. Guidelines are all in the application which is attached to this email, please return them to Ford Hall.

Also, in cooperation with the Arts Management program IGG is seeking work to display in the lobby and the space between the two theaters in Quirk Hall. For more information please contact Chaely at cchartie@emich.edu.

Both of these are great opportunities for resume building and vital experience in the art world. Also, remember Student Show applications are due Thursday, November 8 by 4 PM.

Thank You,

Rob Todd

my process

crisis-final1.png

I usually don’t talk too much about my work, but a student recently mentioned that they wish they knew more about my process and my work. So I decided I may be able to use this as a means of teaching about process. So here is a quick post about some work in progress, a postcard for an upcoming exhibition at the Detroit Industrial Project space at the Russell Industrial complex.

I usually start with generating ideas or methods that guide the design. The show is called crisis, which according to the short summary/curatorial statement is defined as a state of change/flux/etc. (that summary doesn’t quite do it justice, but it works). Often when I am doing client type work (like this, where there isn’t much time to design), I use one of 2 strategies. The first, I use adjectives and metaphors to guide either the method or the selection in imagery. The second, I pull things out of a bag of tricks, ideas that were shelved on other projects, or old methods and rationalize the use of them for this particular project. Sometimes it is a combination of both.

There are few other things I do when I make work:
1. I prefer to only use imagery that I create.
2. Whenever possible I use type that I create.
3. If using imagery or type that is not my own, modify it significantly so that it becomes my own.
(I believe that designers should take ownership of what they create, this is my way of doing that.)

wow i really enjoy jakab tonight…. reminds me of pssst past it on in london… i think its good to have some background in type (for everything) but i think it especially helps in motion and i feel as though motion with type is even more interesting. what programs can you use to do 3D motion? i know there is flash and afteraffects but is there anything else?

Old Type Design

I was at a garage sale a couple of weeks ago and I found some old books there and I spent about half an hour going through them looking at the type and some of the letter forms, just admiring them. They were early 1900’s so they weren’t super old but now I’m wishing I got one of them (they were mostly type, not too many images – woodcuts?). I think I’m able to admire them more so because of Leslie’s History of Graphic design class because we have been talking about old type from type designers such as Firmin Didot, John Baskerville, William Caxton, Nicolaus Jenson, and Goudy and Dwiggins (2 U.S. type designers). As a lot of you know (who have her class) – just ignore me, we are going to the 7th floor of the graduate library next Monday October 15th at U of M to see actual old books such as old books such as religious works that monks designed and wrote as well as non-religious books and secular books (How to’s) and Geoffrey Chaucer’s “The Canterbury Tales”.

For those of you who don’t have Leslie’s class but you want to learn more about the processes she gave us a cool site that has articles movies and other stuff…the typeculture.com resource page links to these things.

zune

i was on the internet looking up information about michael jakab and i found an interesting website.  its called zune (https://www.zune-arts.net/). it appears that the public can view these motion pieces/design and you don’t have to be a member. i’m pretty useless when it comes to motion, so i am not sure if this is a site that everyone knows about except me (my apologies if you do). does anyone know why zune mp3 player created this website for art?  is anyone a member?

Really… I wonder how they created the toaster… and how can I create my own 3d toaster that pulls apart to reveal sections of my portfolio!

The Adventures of Mark Twain

The Adventures of Mark Twain
Does anyone else remember this? The Adventures of Mark Twain is a 1985 clamation movie about the bizaar and weird adventures of Mark Twain and friends. It’s seriously weird stuff, but awesome clamation by Will Vinton. Check out this clip from the 1985 film in which Satan visits the children.

Architectural Rendering

krob1.png

The Ken Roberts Architectural rendering competition is one of the more prestigious competitions for the rendering of architecture. Take a look at last years winners for some inspiration. My classmate and roomate Bryan Sumruld was one of last years winners.
