two projects, similar to the typology assignment

I ran across these two projects (one today and one a while back).

This first one is a post about the color schemes in movie posters, quite fascinating when it is broken down in this visual form. To read more about it go here: “Dark and Fleshy: The Color of Top Grossing Movies.”

The second project is a graduate student project from NC State University. It examines chickens. Again I am drawn to this breakdown of color and pattern found in chickens. Visit Jamie Gray’s site for more about the project.

heaven forbid that i actually read the content on these sites so forgive me if i paraphrase – its interesting how the rating system relates to the intensity of the palettes – they’re pretty similar.

The movie poster analysis is great- and seems very related to magazine advertising in terms of hue and proportion of colors used for targeting different income levels, different age demographics and different ethnic populations. There must be a lot of research done on what appeals to these different segments because the results are so incredibly consistent. The display of colors in those bars gives a lot of information in a clear, concise way- Tufte would love it I think.

I love the movie poster analysis. It was really interesting to see what color are used for the different ratings and how they change. I makes sense because they want to appeal to different age groups, but I never really thought about it. I find myself looking at different ad’s and analyzing the colors used now.
