Connections

Every time I went to an AIGA event, portfolio review, etc., they always stressed making connections everywhere you go because it is the connections that will sometimes get you into doors. I recently found out how true that is. I just interviewed for a job that was not advertised to the public, because someone I know heard about it and passed the info on to me. If I were just looking on their website, I would’ve never known there was an opening, but now I have a pretty sweet job there. Yay for connections! Also, at the interview, the lady I was talking to said that as soon as she saw on my resume that I had graduated from Eastern, she knew that I had done enough quality, hands-on work to prepare me for the job. I guess that says something good about the graphic design program at Eastern, and I just wanted to pass that on and say thanks to the professors who made it that way.

Speaking from a historical standpoint Eastern Michigan during the mid 90s was really well regarded for producing great work. Its history was one of the reason why I was interested in it as a faculty member. Cellar Roots which used to be designed mostly by Graphic Design students can be found in several typography books.

I was also surprised to hear about some of the people who taught a class or two here during that era. Ed Fella for example once taught a class here.

Good luck with the new job.

Hooray Jenna!!! That’s fantastic – good luck at the new job!

Jenna, this letter made me happy for many reasons…not the least of which was you getting that job you so richly deserved after all that hard work!

    Give us more details…what company?

  5. Leslie says:

Congrats Jenna. Where is the job and do they let you do exciting projects?

To add to Ryan’s comments: After a lull, we are just beginning to get a very good reputation once again. Evidently, Ed Fella told the graduate students at Cal Arts that EMU is beginning to graduate some really good designers and he attributes it to the professors (of course).

I’m working on contract at the Whirlpool Corporate Headquarters, in their Research and Engineering Department. I love getting to play with the new technology before it is released to the public. The campus is about an hour away from where I live, so I get to work from home, and they send stuff home with me to play with : )

Some of the projects I work on are pretty cool, like the online community they had me design. My supervisor knows I have a limited knowledge of website design, so they’re hiring another company to code my design. On the other hand, I’m currently working on an installation guide, which isn’t so exciting, but it’s nice to have that experience, and neat to think that someday it will be going into millions of homes around the world!

My supervisor is all about getting me as many experiences as possible while I’m there, which will be really helpful in the long-run. Some of it has nothing to do with the projects I’m working on, but they’re paying me to learn, if I’m interested. I can’t complain : )
