Detroit Make it Here
Detroit Make it Here is part of the initiative to revitalize Detroit (and Michigan’s) economy as a creative economy. The site currently offers a variety of articles ranging from business tips to local news. It also features a large directory of designers and design firms in the area, which would be helpful to anyone looking for a job or an internship and trying to figure out what exactly is here. While it the site seems to be in its developmental phase (gee did the words BETA on the site give it away), it may become a great resource for students and professionals in the area.
From their about page:
Detroit is more than just cars. We’re a strong, talented and fiercely passionate community of multigenerational creatives.
That’s right, we’re remarkable. But does everyone know it? Unfortunately, they don’t, but that doesn’t mean we can’t tell them.
This site is in its first phase. We hope that you’ll help us build the best possible tool for our community. Create a profile, meet your peers and spread the word. Meanwhile, we’ll build content, add features and market the site and its network of users.
Are you committed? Do you know the past, respect the legacy, but realize the future’s potential? Do you want to be part of this region’s revival? Sure you do, Detroit. Go ahead, make it here.

Good article about the MFA debt!
That MFA debt does suck. Mines about 200/month.
On a side note, Andrew Thompson (featured in the article) is a really nice guy, friends with many EMU faculty members.
Well, my sister’s going to have a combined master’s debt with her husband, and it’s impressive… but they’re having a really tough time finding something in English or Social Work to pay it off.
Still… MFA sounds like so much fun to me…
You know, Detroit has no large grocery stores…none. My wife and I were seriously thinking about coming back to Detroit to help out in the fight for basic services in the city. For such a huge city to have no major (chain, I guess, but really any sort of supermarket) grocery stores is insane…
I’m a native Michigander (Flint School of Performing Arts grad) working in New England. The New England Foundation for the Arts has been doing creative economy research since the 70’s. We’ve launched an intereactive website detailing the creative economy here–CultureCount.
Also, although it’s not the size of the D–you should check out the revitalization of North Adams, MA with MassMoCA. Essentially, they revamped an abandoned energy mill and created a HUGE contemporary art museum. They’ve kept great archives of the process (it started w/ the mayor in ,87).
Nick – it’s true. Grocery shopping in Detroit is an issue. Move back!!
Also, nice link. It was an interesting article about MFA debt. I liked the side bar that breaks down the cost of the local schools.
