Remix culture and the election

In the age of the internet remixes and mash-ups are a dime-a-dozen. But this particular one stands out as it cleverly illustrates the repetition of issues, key deliverables, found in the presidential debates. As we’ve looked at diagrams this one serves as a diagram as well, using everything from timing, rhythm, scale, etc. to get its point across.

Monday Round-up (Philly-edition)

The Fall Classic is upon us and somewhat fittingly the Phillies play a critical game 5 tonight to win it all. Founded on today in 1682, Philadelphia has brought us some great achievements: the Constitution, the Liberty Bell, one of the first public libraries lending books to members, the cheese steak sandwich, Boyz II Men, and of course the greatest mascot of all time the Philly Fanatic (as seen above).

Also on the internet this week:

Amazing illustrations and borders.

The debate I want to hear, Motion Graphics or Motion Design?

Graf in Japan.

A bizarre Armenian film.

Who cares about Design History? A nice interview with Barbara Ehrbar.

Great flickr set of Masked figurines.

A critique of typography on current movie posters.

Amazing observation deck on a mountain.

On concept generation.

Nice Audi spot. With a great run through interior design through the years.

Great interview with type designer Satoru Nihei.

Check out these idents for MTV Organic.

Historical photos from the Netherlands.

The interior work of Katrin Olina is wonderful.

Nice motion work by Thank You.

Easy portfolio

picture-5.png

This will be helpful to you students. It’s a pretty nice and easy way to make a portfolio if you’re not familiar with coding and web design. It’s also just nice if you want to throw something up on the web really quick, like an exhibit or something…

Monday Round-Up (BCS edition)

bcs-analysis-2.jpg

The BCS calculations have arrived! For college football fans, this determines who will play for the national championship. The BCS is one giant puzzle, full of confusing formulas and calculations. In my lifetime, the BCS has seemed to cause more controversy in college football than perhaps anything else. But still some of us hope and cling to the chance of our team (well maybe not Eastern) taking the National Title home. So enjoy a few charts of last years BCS race.

Also found on the internets:

Homes made from shipping containers.

Garamond Powerline

Nice interviews with various winners of the ADC Young Guns Award.

Beautiful typographic flourish studies.

Nice work by Eve Duhamel

Analog Futurism. Great stop motion video.

Nice spot for the freelancers union.

Armin Vit asks where are the design cities.

Inspire from Adobe. Nice video about the making of the heads up display for IronMan.

High heel typeface.

Gideon Baws of Shynola passed away.

Designfeast. A huge resource of blogs and sites on design.

More historic photos on Flickr, this time of Canada.

Pretty Cool People Interviews: Genevieve Gauckler.

Kings of Power 4 Billion. Videogame animation goes wild, a bit NSFW.

Beautiful Arabesque designs

Interesting post about bank logos, in relationship to the financial crisis.

Public Domain audio books.

Anatomy of a legoman.

On the division of ideology…

multiyear3small.gif

I have for some time been trying to figure out a way of discussing the current election in a design context. On a previous post there was a discussion about the portrayal in the media of the great divide between “liberals” and “conservatives.” So I started out writing this post wondering are we as a Nation really that polarized? Is it just Red vs. Blue with no in-between? or is there something else. And more specifically how do we view/represent this polarization?

The above map created by Robert J. Vanderbei, of Princeton, portrays the presidential elections based on county rather than state. It shows the shift in political ideology from 1968 to now. For example in 1968 it clearly shows the effect George Wallace, of the American Independent party, running on pro-segregation platform. 1992 shows the effect of Ross Perot, who was favored in several counties, but did not win any states or electoral votes. Interestingly enough, there is no indication of Ralph Nader being favored in any county during the 2000 election.

Monday round-up (take-me-on edition)

Conservatism vs design history…

Here’s an interesting flier / pack of lies about the famous Sheppard Fairy Obama posters. They claim/lie the Obama poster is a rip off of Soviet and Mao posters…proving once again how a lack of design history can be a dangerous thing!

This group “Americans for Visual Literacy” doesn’t have a web page nor did they sign their names…it’s basically conservative lies in a Presidential debate. Shocking, in this day and age, I know…

Here is the entire article and Sheppard’s well written reply.

So yeah…be educated voters AND graphic designers, please.
