Monday round-up (take-me-on edition)
While I usually espouse some sort of fun fact related to this day in history, I decided that I would post this awesome remake of Aha’s Take On Me. Also found on the dubbya-dubbya-dubbya this week:
Some amazing historic photos of Virginia on Flickr.
Left Unsaid is a great personal film made by The Ronin. I saw him present this in London a few years ago when it was in progress.
Great old timey Halloween photos.
Be a design entrepreneur.
When I was in Italy as an undergrad I spent several evenings going to Padova for drinks and college atmosphere. It was a short train ride away, littered around the town are these awesome posters for degree candidates, here is a nice article on the posters in Padua (Padova).
Design + wedding = this.
Côme de Bouchony. I really dig lots of the work coming out of France now.
Even you can ANIMATE!!!
Great animation by Nando Costa.
Obsessions Make My Life Worse… Interesting project by Sagmeister.
A blogger breaks down typographic inaccuracies in Mad Men.
The Inventor of the Cowboy Shirt.
The 68 Olympics are one of my favorite designed campaigns. Here a bit about it.
No more drunk e-mailing.
Another beautifully animated game.
Teach yourself flash, make a fan video.
Artists + album covers = fun. The Coverband exhibit.
I really like the idea behind this Ford Fiesta commercial.
The Atlas of the Real World.
That’s all for this week. Enjoy.

Lol, I saw that Literal Take on Me video a couple weeks ago and couldn’t stop laughing.
Oh god, that Animation software… I have to say that is horrible. They’re trying to be like “Yeah! You can make a cartoon of your own without any freaking knowledge!” However, I had a program just like that as a kid, and it was more of a toy. It was called The Spiderman Cartoon Maker. I still have the disc somewhere. You could make your own “cartoons” with Spiderman and a bunch of characters from the 90s cartoon. Usually though my cousin and I just made Aunt May explode for no apparent reason. It was weird though, because every character had a looping sound effect as they walked. Plus, in what cartoon do characters talk with speech bubbles like in a comic?
Oh god those icecream people will haunt my nightmares.
That design entrepreneur book looks great. I just ordered it, and can’t wait to check it out.
Also, using firefox and this page looks pretty funky. I assume it’s the current video player throwing everything off. Safari renders fine.
the a-ha video was funny. still one of my favorite videos ever. not really much competition since mtv doesnt play music videos anymore.
the ronin video looked really nice but it also reminded me of every album on jade tree records during the 90’s. either that or a ford/chevy commercial. gods country!
and yes, this page looks wacky on firefox.
Ryan the title is “Take On Me.” You must show your proper 80s respect ;)
Chad- being done in 1985, I doubt much “software” was involved. Lots of old school rotoscoping.
It does look dated in terms of illustration, but making fun of some technical stuff is like making fun of say silent films or color quality of images in a life magazine from the 50s.
As a teen I thought it a cheesy song, but well done video. Not it has the 80s squiggles and worse…80s hair.
If I remember correctly, A-ha did another video after this where the guy from comic world goes off and DIES via an explosion in the first 2 seconds. Which made we wonder why even feature him at all?
It’s official: Halloween was way more creepy scary in the olden days.
The real atlas maps were fun and informative.
Page should be fixed now…
That Nando Costa animation is beautiful… he really did an amazing job animating the red character…quite graceful for that sort of style.
Andy, I was talking about the link to the animation software, not the Take on Me video. There is an extra space between the paragraphs to distinguish the topic change. I would never make fun of that video, as I’ve loved it since I was old enough to comprehend what was going on (as I was born in ‘85).
