I keep coming on here, putting in my two cents’ worth about other people’s logos, so I thought I’d post a logo that I’m currently working on, to get some feedback. I struggle with logos, and it’s probably my least favorite thing to do, but I managed to get assigned this one. Yipee.
The logo is for a huge, global department, that has had no rhyme or reason to any of their documents, sign-age, powerpoint presentations, etc. The department is called “CMAS,” short for Chemistry, Materials and Analytical Sciences. They mostly do materials innovation and appliance forensics, meaning they come up with new materials (plastics, resins, coatings, etc.) and figure out what went wrong when something on an appliance goes bad (cracked shelves, dysfunctional parts, corrosion, etc.). Most of it is waaaay over my head.
Each CMAS lab is basically a big chemistry lab with a lot of really hi-tech equipment, so I made a periodic table, and shrunk it down to make it more compact. It took the shape of a building, which fits, because part of what they do is make materials out of the elements, or study the materials to see what elements it contains (to check for possible material contamination). The bottom logo is just another version of the top logo, to be used when the text would become too hard to read. Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Brand New is a blog dedicated to rebranding corporate identities. Created by Armin Vit of Speak Up, it would be a helpful reference for those working on the rebranding assignment in Intermediate Graphic Design. The format of each post commonly shows the before and after of identities (as seen below). The comments are often lively discussions about the successes and failures of each rebrand so be sure to read through some of them.

This is not a substantive post, but I just thought it was neat seeing someone wearing something from EMU on TV. When I tell people where I went to school I often get blank stares…
Obviously Michael Moore is Michigan biased, but still… go EMU!

There will be no round-up this week, I find myself overwhelmingly swamped to sort through the many great finds of this past week. So be on the lookout for next’s week extra-special-super-duper-extra-length-two-weeks-worth edition of the monday round-up. I promise there will be plenty to look at.

i have decided to put some links up to help people looking for work. these are absolutely dismal times and although im creating competitors i would rather not have others go through the shit im going through. a lot of these were given to me so now im passing them on. enjoy.
pick a city aiga page…
computer arts (foggy london town)
fortune - check out some of the best companies to work for and see where you fit in.
if you can get a government job (city, county, state, country) i suggest you do it. talk about job security – think of all the fuck ups you deal with when you go to the secretary of state or court.
some other tips: cyber-stalking. find an area you want to work, then look up aiga members in that area on the aiga site. a lot of emails or links to their personal or business sites are present so take advantage of it.
interns: a lot of places are looking for interns. if you can afford it, do it.
to lighten the mood, i often think of a city or industry i want to work for and explore it for a while – like video games, skateboarding, portland, boobies…wait, what? that’s a different mood. regardless, its not fun but if you have an imagination you can trick yourself into thinking its fun and something great may come of it.
dont ever limit your search to studios or agencies. a lot companies have in-house designers in every industry – aviation, fashion, electronics. design is everywhere we look so look everywhere.
look for a headhunter, but be careful.
search city business directories.
keep busy. make projects for yourself. its hard to keep at it. i go through droughts where i dont do shit – its important to have people around you or people you stay in contact with that will help you through these periods. you’ve heard this all before and i know the professors stress it and they should. it matters. set a night up to draw or have collage contests, whatever you have to do. do it.
take a notepad and go to borders. sift through the magazines you like and look for art directors or editors to contact. also, look through and see what products and companies are mentioned and check them out too. i.e. cool, a video game company. wow gears of war 2 looks cool. who makes it?
i have more links somewhere, i have to reorganize my bookmarks and i will make a part 2.
end of line.
