How to be a motion designer

This video has been out on the interwebs for some time now but I figured I would share it as some of the seniors soon approach graduation in a few weeks. Nick Campbell of Digital Kitchen (and greyscalegorilla his personal site) shares his thoughts on what it takes to get into the business of motion design.

I personally think he hits the nail on the head when he says that in school you need to know the basics, good design principles, good typography, etc. He makes it a point to say that the creative stuff and formal stuff comes first, and then learning software is something you can do at anytime.

This is very much the philosophy of most architecture schools, teach design first, then upon graduation and in the real world one learns the nuts and bolts of putting buildings together, working with clients, etc.

If you get a chance check out the blog on his site greyscalegorilla there are plenty of good things there especially some nice Cinema 4D tutorials.

Did You Know

So, this isn’t perhaps the coolest ever video and the Fatboy Slim song is a bit distracting but I think there is a real context here about our changing society. It’s definitely not the card catalog, no such thing as internet, days that I grew up in.

Crowdspring.com

If you love competition, logo design, and money, you might want to give this site a shot. I just found it through Facebook ads, but pretty much you make and upload logos for a company, and if they choose yours, they pay you a couple hundred. The only downside is your logos have to be uber awesome since tons of people also upload (hence “competition”).

Typography, etc.

I figured in light of a plea for typographic help I would actually create a post featuring some books and sites that may help the struggling designer. As for gaining a better understanding of typography a great deal of it comes from looking and trying to understand why things work. Emulate other designers whose work you admire to figure out what they did and then make things on your own. You only get better at it by doing it. So here’s a list of resources that may help you:

On the internets:
typoposters.jpg
Typographic Posters (typographicposters.com). Has a great directory of images of work, from avant-garde experimental type to good old clean grid based typography.

The Behance Network (behance.net). Run a search on Behance without specifying anything other than the category of typography and you will find some great things.

I Love Typography (ilovetypography.com). Nice blog that has lots of type related posts.

TypeNeu (typeneu.com). Another blog site full of good current typography.

Swiss Legacy (swisslegacy.com). A blog dedicated to looking at the history of Swiss design and current work that invokes the days of the international style.
