Michigan has had a long-standing and prominent reputation as the home to many great and influential designers and artisans, many of whom have defined past generations and continue to be influential in our state, national, and global economies. From art and design schools to furniture companies, from the big three to the many smaller firms, Michigan hosts a world-class collection of artists and designers residing and working within its bounds. Often overlooked, we must remind ourselves of the robust history that is woven into the fabric of our state. It is now time that we not only look back at our history for inspiration but forge ahead to cast a new vision for Michigan design.
As an introduction to a series of events that will unfold over the next two years, AIGA Detroit proudly presents the Celebrate Michigan Design Poster Competition. We encourage you to share your thoughts, experiences and ideas about the future of design in our state. There are many stories to tell. This competition is a chance to give a voice to the design community by creating a poster showcasing the positive power of design and its influence on technology, culture and society.
Sponsored by AIGA Detroit in partnership with Phoenix Press |

The Model Your Campus in 3-D contest is back this year. If you have any interest in learning more about 3-D modeling, photography, georgraphy ect… you should check it out.
If you are interested, email me, becaus I would like to get a team together. We tried last year, but it was all seniors and we didn’t have enough time (it was due during graduation). This year it isn’t due until June 1st, but it’s now an international competition.
We should involve some of the CG people from Sill hall and really put forth a good effort.

EMU Friends of the Library need our help. They are having a contest and need us to do the following:
- design a bookmark
- design for a 11″ x 8″ canvas bag (2-3 colours)
- design a new logo for them
Each category will win a $100 gift certificate. These designs will give back to the EMU community as they are using them for a fund raiser to make the library better. Not only do you have a chance to win some money but you have the opportunity to give back to EMU. There are a few restrictions you must remember:
- bookmark and canvas bag must say “EMU Friends of the Library”
- your name and graduation year will appear on the design
- you can have a printed piece to put in your portfolio
- they really want your design to “POP”
- let’s show the library how supportive we are
if you need to ask my any questions, please e-mail me or reply to this. my e-mail is jalliso1@emich.eduif you would like to visit EMU friends of the Library website go to http://brand.emich.edu/fol

Dear Students,
Enclosed is the application for the Senior Show. Your faculty encourages you all to enter…and it’s the very first time we are having this event. This is a great way to end your education at EMU- a show with your peers highlighting those about to graduate.

I just wanted to say thank you to those of you who have shown support for the AIGA this semester. I want to let everyone know that they are welcome to get involved at any time, whether you’ve been in contact with the group up until now or not.
I am happy that there were plenty of people at the weekly meetings, and I saw several familiar faces traveling to the different area events whenever I had the chance to attend.
Just so everyone knows joining the AIGA as a paid member is great for you and for us, but it is not required for you to be involved with the group on campus. We do need a certain number of paid members to keep our status as a student chapter, but coming out and seeing what it’s like to attend events and meet the professionals in the area for a while before getting a paid membership is perfectly reasonable. Just remember though that unless you keep a close eye on the detroit.aiga.org website, the only way you’ll find out about those events is talking to the members that get the regular emails and stay in touch with those professionals.
I wish everyone luck in finishing up their finals. Congratulations to those of you who are graduating this weekend! I know a lot of others can see the light at the end of April. Everyone else, just keep on working and you’ll be up for that degree soon.
I also wanted to thank the professors for caring about how this all works out and giving their time for us.
Travel safe if you’re headed out of here for the holidays, and have a great New Year’s!
