| Michigan has had a long-standing and prominent reputation as the home to many great and influential designers and artisans, many of whom have defined past generations and continue to be influential in our state, national, and global economies. From art and design schools to furniture companies, from the big three to the many smaller firms, Michigan hosts a world-class collection of artists and designers residing and working within its bounds. Often overlooked, we must remind ourselves of the robust history that is woven into the fabric of our state. It is now time that we not only look back at our history for inspiration but forge ahead to cast a new vision for Michigan design.
As an introduction to a series of events that will unfold over the next two years, AIGA Detroit proudly presents the Celebrate Michigan Design Poster Competition. We encourage you to share your thoughts, experiences and ideas about the future of design in our state. There are many stories to tell. This competition is a chance to give a voice to the design community by creating a poster showcasing the positive power of design and its influence on technology, culture and society. Sponsored by AIGA Detroit in partnership with Phoenix Press |

The Model Your Campus in 3-D contest is back this year. If you have any interest in learning more about 3-D modeling, photography, georgraphy ect… you should check it out.
If you are interested, email me, becaus I would like to get a team together. We tried last year, but it was all seniors and we didn’t have enough time (it was due during graduation). This year it isn’t due until June 1st, but it’s now an international competition.
We should involve some of the CG people from Sill hall and really put forth a good effort.

Early January I received an invitation to an event kicking off a contest exclusive to all past and present ADC Young Gun Winners (a decade’s worth of award winners). While I couldn’t attend the event, I would eventually receive the official guidelines that would enable me to participate in this “contest.” I got the e-mail on friday. The contest: to design the 27th letter.
I find this particular contest quite intriguing, and at this moment am considering making the ART 462 (Image Making 2) class part of it. So on Tuesday in class I will talk more about this becoming a class project, but in the meantime, if you are reading the blog what are your thoughts? Are people interested in another class project?
I usually don’t like competitions, but in this case it has some nice rewards. The work featured in an online exhibition and published in a limited edition book. The proceeds go to non-profit group Lettra27. So it is for a good cause. And lets admit it is also quite a talent pool, it would be impressive to be one the ones chosen.
Visit www.theundiscoveredletter.com to learn more about it.

Dear Students,
The first annual BFA exhibit is coming up soon! February 11th.
This is a SENIORS only show. The FIRST one we have ever held and something we have been pushing for for a long time. It will be hung in the University Gallery at. Be a part of EMU history.
If you are a senior with around 100 credits, you are elligible.Think about 1-3 works that they you want to install for the exhibit.
We will send along information soon about how we will go about working with you for spotting and installing.
This is a GREAT opportunity to show your work to the public, friend, parents, etc …and a nice way to end your time at EMU.
Come on people … do like Alan and Sarah said and TEAR THAT SHIT UP ! ;)
Best,

There is a little girl back home (in Brockville Ontario) that was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Her name is Lilly and she is one-years-old. There is going to be an art exhibition in Toronto where all art sold will go towards her medical bills as she comes from a family that isn’t well off. I’m looking for people who would be interested in donating paintings or creating paintings, photos, posters, ect. for the exhibition - but there’s a catch: the exhibition is called “Lilies for Lilly” so all art should be of a lily or lilies. If you can have the items for me before February 16th 2008 that would be sweet. If you can frame it that would be even better but if not I can pay for it to be framed.
Canadian Sarah (ask around if you don’t know who I am)

If you have not yet heard, the annual juried Student Show has been moved to the fall semester. This may seem like a strange idea but, among other reasons, Larry gave up the opportunity to use the University Gallery and we decided we would try it. This is certainly a trial run to see how the change will go. However, that does not mean that we expect the show to be sub-par. On the contrary, we hope that with the use of the best gallery on campus we can make the Student Show better than it’s ever been but we need the help of the teachers to get the word out.
- Application deadline is NOVEMBER 8 at 4 PM (turn in to Ford)
- Pieces not accepted to last year’s show can be resubmitted this semester.
- Applications are available in Ford and the Student Gallery in the Student Center.
- Questions should be forwarded to intermediaEMU@hotmail.com.
This year’s exhibition will be jurried by Greg Tom, Programming & Development Coordinator of MoCAD.
