EMU Friends of the Library need our help. They are having a contest and need us to do the following:
- design a bookmark
- design for a 11″ x 8″ canvas bag (2-3 colours)
- design a new logo for them
Each category will win a $100 gift certificate. These designs will give back to the EMU community as they are using them for a fund raiser to make the library better. Not only do you have a chance to win some money but you have the opportunity to give back to EMU. There are a few restrictions you must remember:
- bookmark and canvas bag must say “EMU Friends of the Library”
- your name and graduation year will appear on the design
- you can have a printed piece to put in your portfolio
- they really want your design to “POP”
- let’s show the library how supportive we are
if you need to ask my any questions, please e-mail me or reply to this. my e-mail is jalliso1@emich.eduif you would like to visit EMU friends of the Library website go to http://brand.emich.edu/fol

I saw “The Lion King; Live” last night at the Detroit Opera House and this is what I have to saw about it:
OH MY GOD GO SEE IT NOW.
This was one of the most awesome and artistic experiences I have ever been witness to.
The play started late, as plays are want to do, but then they made an announcement and the lights went down. Rafiki hobbles onto stage and starts to sing…and then the animal puppets begin to come out onto the stage.
The puppetry in this play is absolutely gobsmacking. The giraffes lumber out from the wings and a cheetah comes out…then the zebra leap out with the gazelles…and then gasps from the audience below us. Going down the aisle is a HUGE elephant with a baby elephant, Rhino, birds flying about, and antelope….all on stage where Pride Rock appears and the lions come out to greet the newborn king. and the sun is rising in the back too. It was breathtaking, I was overwhelmed with the beauty of this scene and it really set the stage for the rest of the play.
The lion masks are sooo intricate and they are able to move from the head of the actors and they really move like lions would.
The stage had an intricate design that disguised the tracks for many of the set pieces and the back half actually lifted up in the air to make a hill in the background.
The lighting effects made the sky llok like a sky and the stars looked real. Water seemed to really rush down a water fall and the use of strobe lighting during the scene where Mufasa falls to his death make it really seem as if he gets stampeded upon by the buffalo.
Timon and Puumba puppets are hilarious. Timon is alsmot a full human sized puppet while Puumba’s head is as wide as a small car and the hind legs of the puppet flail around in the air hilariously.
The children playing Nala and Simba were very talented singers and dancers and they moved nimbly during the bright and colorful “I just can’t wait to be king” sequence. The animals during that song were all from simba’s imagination and were made of patterns and unusual colors with different shapes but you could still tell what they were.
The “Can you feel the love” song was absolutely gorgous, the stage looked like a jungle and there were high wire dancers dangling in the air showing the “love” swirling around. it really embodied the feeling.
The whole thing was just….wow. if you can, please go see it and experience it. You will not regret it.
I also bought two books, one was how these disney prodections are put on and the other was about the history and the show of The Lion King. Which has all of the puppetry tricks and what not in it, and I cannot wait until I read it.

There is a little girl back home (in Brockville Ontario) that was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Her name is Lilly and she is one-years-old. There is going to be an art exhibition in Toronto where all art sold will go towards her medical bills as she comes from a family that isn’t well off. I’m looking for people who would be interested in donating paintings or creating paintings, photos, posters, ect. for the exhibition - but there’s a catch: the exhibition is called “Lilies for Lilly” so all art should be of a lily or lilies. If you can have the items for me before February 16th 2008 that would be sweet. If you can frame it that would be even better but if not I can pay for it to be framed.
