All,
This weekend AIGA Toledo is hosting a student portfolio review in Bowling Green, OH. The format will be similar to the one we hosted. All students are welcome to attend. This is encouraged if you live or plan to live in Ohio as it might be a good idea to network with some Ohio based designers.http://toledo.aiga.org/events/2008/04/17182862

Got this email from a former student who is doing well. Reply to him if interested or you have questions, because that’s all the info I got.

Andy, Ryan and Leslie,
I’ve been working as an intern with Campbell-Ewald for the last 6 months, and should be offered a full-time Art Director position with another creative group very soon. They will be searching for another intern to fill my shoes before I’m out of here, and I thought I’d put the word out to all of you in case you had any students interested. It’s a direct mail group that works with GM, OnStar, Wyndham Hotels, XM Radio, AC Delco and some others. Pay is 8 an hour, and they’d probably be looking for 2 people to split 40 hours. A great opportunity for anyone who’s interested in advertising…I can’t even describe how helpful it would have been had I done it while in school.
Let me know if you have anyone interested, or just pass my contact info over to them. Most of the art directors here didn’t even know EMU had a design program, but I’ve built up a good reputation so far…so it would be nice to keep it going.
Hope you are all doing well, and hopefully this helps someone.
Thanks.
Jon

Hello everyone, my name is Ryan Myers. I was a design student at EMU three years ago and have been checking back here for the past couple months partly to see what current EMU students are digging up around the web and partly because it provides a source of inspiration to see a group of students so involved and interested in design. Ryan Molloy is letting me post here in hopes that I can shed some light on life after school and also to share with you some things I find interesting and or inspirational. That being said, here are some links to job posting sites and sites to create a profile with portfolio of your work.

EMU Friends of the Library need our help. They are having a contest and need us to do the following:
- design a bookmark
- design for a 11″ x 8″ canvas bag (2-3 colours)
- design a new logo for them
Each category will win a $100 gift certificate. These designs will give back to the EMU community as they are using them for a fund raiser to make the library better. Not only do you have a chance to win some money but you have the opportunity to give back to EMU. There are a few restrictions you must remember:
- bookmark and canvas bag must say “EMU Friends of the Library”
- your name and graduation year will appear on the design
- you can have a printed piece to put in your portfolio
- they really want your design to “POP”
- let’s show the library how supportive we are
if you need to ask my any questions, please e-mail me or reply to this. my e-mail is jalliso1@emich.eduif you would like to visit EMU friends of the Library website go to http://brand.emich.edu/fol

There is a little girl back home (in Brockville Ontario) that was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Her name is Lilly and she is one-years-old. There is going to be an art exhibition in Toronto where all art sold will go towards her medical bills as she comes from a family that isn’t well off. I’m looking for people who would be interested in donating paintings or creating paintings, photos, posters, ect. for the exhibition - but there’s a catch: the exhibition is called “Lilies for Lilly” so all art should be of a lily or lilies. If you can have the items for me before February 16th 2008 that would be sweet. If you can frame it that would be even better but if not I can pay for it to be framed.

So I’m going to sound like some teen that just got a picture in the mail from some pop artist but this is way cooler. I always talk about how mathematical art inspired me to go into graphic design and computer science. Everywhere I look and find that kind of at and know that’s what I want to do is by Ben Fry. I totally look up to him as an artist and am amazed at everything he’s done. I found his e-mail address on one of his websites and figured it couldn’t hurt to send him an e-mail. I wrote to him about how I found out about him and how he’s inspired my work and asked if he ever takes interns and what kind of advice he could give me… I kept thinking, in my eyes, this guys is a celebrity and I’ll probably never hear back but last night I actually got a personalized e-mail back responding to my questions and giving me advice! I actually heard back from the guy who’s inspired it all!! I’m crazy excited and told my mom I’m going to frame the e-mail lol… Anyways I just wanted to tell all of you that in hopes it inspires you guys to contact those artist who’ve inspired you… It turns out these guys are actually human and maybe write you back, and who knows how many doors it could open if you just take that chance… Good Luck and please let me know if you have similar things happen. It would also be cool to know who inspires you so I could check out their work as well…

Cellar Roots, EMU’s student literary magazine, is looking for two graphic designers–one to design advertising (which would be more of a year-long gig) and one to design the book (which would be a more focused assignment, mostly working in the winter). They are looking for students with a little experience, though are always willing to give students new to the process a chance.
I don’t know about compensation, but in the early and mid 90s Cellar Roots was make waves in many design publications. It had quite the exposure, I knew about it even before I came here.

Hey Andrew,
I work for a company called Your Memory Lane, find us at www.yourmemorylane.com We only use Illustrator to design our stuff. Do you have any students whom you would say are ADVANCED with Illustrator? We are looking for someone that can come in to the position who doesn’t need help learning how to use Illustrator, but can be shown how we do things. We are looking to gear someone up for what we expect to be a huge Christmas this year. Oh yeah, this is a PAID position.
