After working as EMU Student Center Operations student graphic designer for what will be almost three years in April, it is about time for me to say “Good bye.” This means the department is in need of a replacement to start working the beginning of the 2010 Spring semester. The details are below:

Position Description

The Graphic Designer is responsible for designing and producing marketing and advertising materials for the Student Center and other departments/offices as requested. This position reports to the Communications Coordinator.

General Responsibilities

• Design ads for various Student Center marketing campaigns
• Design promotional materials
• Update Student Center print pieces as needed (Directories, brochures, directional signage, etc.)
• Assist building vendors with graphic needs
• Assist with website design and updates as needed
• Serve as a graphic design resource to other departments and offices
• Complete projects in a timely manner

Qualifications

• Experience and skills typically associated with upper-class graphic design majors.
• Previous graphic design experience, whether it be work or volunteer
• Expertise using CS3 Design Software on an Apple platform environment
• Experience moving design through print production process
• Excellent organizational and communication skills
• Strong critical thinking and problem solving skills
• Enjoy working with others
• Must be in good academic and judicial standing
• GPA of at least a 2.5

Availability

Applicants must be able to start at the beginning of the 2010 spring semester. The student graphic designer typically works 20-30 hours during the spring and summer semesters and 15-20 hours during the fall and winter. The starting hourly rate is commensurate with experience. This video has been out on the interwebs for some time now but I figured I would share it as some of the seniors soon approach graduation in a few weeks. Nick Campbell of Digital Kitchen (and greyscalegorilla his personal site) shares his thoughts on what it takes to get into the business of motion design.

I personally think he hits the nail on the head when he says that in school you need to know the basics, good design principles, good typography, etc. He makes it a point to say that the creative stuff and formal stuff comes first, and then learning software is something you can do at anytime.

This is very much the philosophy of most architecture schools, teach design first, then upon graduation and in the real world one learns the nuts and bolts of putting buildings together, working with clients, etc.

If you get a chance check out the blog on his site greyscalegorilla there are plenty of good things there especially some nice Cinema 4D tutorials.

Though there may have been a few more dickbutts on it.

1. design a bookmark
2. design for a 11″ x 8″ canvas bag (2-3 colours) 
3. design a new logo for them

Each category will win a $100 gift certificate. These designs will give back to the EMU community as they are using them for a fund raiser to make the library better. Not only do you have a chance to win some money but you have the opportunity to give back to EMU. There are a few restrictions you must remember:

• bookmark and canvas bag must say “EMU Friends of the Library”
• your name and graduation year will appear on the design
• you can  have a printed piece to put in your portfolio
• they really want your design to “POP”
• let’s show the library how supportive we are

The first annual BFA exhibit is coming up soon!  February 11th.

This is a SENIORS only show. The FIRST one we have ever held and something we have been pushing for for a long time. It will be hung in the University Gallery at. Be a part of EMU history.

If you are a senior with around 100 credits, you are elligible.Think about 1-3 works that they you want to install for the exhibit. 

We will send along information soon about how we will go about working with you for spotting and installing.

This is a GREAT opportunity to show your work to the public, friend, parents, etc …and a nice way to end your time at EMU.

Come on people … do like Alan and Sarah said and TEAR THAT SHIT UP !  ;)
