What to Learn

Hi everyone – I haven’t posted to this blog in a while, but here’s some good information about being a creative professional by Nick Campbell from Digital Kitchen. Be sure to check out his blog, portfolio, and the five second projects on video (all linked below):

Interactive design method

plcom.png

I’ve decided to change this blog entry into something more useful for EMU students, and explain the process we followed to create this site. If you’re creating a site by yourself, you might sketch out a design, create mockups, and code everything without having to illustrate many ideas. But, when you work with other designers and developers, more organization is often needed to streamline the process.

Nobody Beats The Drum

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wrk_cEmNnPc

A friend of mine showed me this video, and I really liked it. Mostly the music. So I looked into it, and they’re musicians. I checked out their website, and it is pretty cool. They have their video actually loop as the background.

Logo Design Contest

I post my drawings on the site Deviant Art. Figured I’d let everyone know that there is a competition right now to design a new logo for them. Prize is $2,500. The thing is, the logo you see above is their new logo. This competition is a challenge to make a better logo than above. I think this logo is better than their old one, but I’m letting you guys know about this, in case you want to take a stab at it.

They have to be submitted by October 14 at 11:59pm. I’m pretty sure you need to have an account in order to enter, since the entries need to be submitted under a specific category of “deviation submissions.” There are free accounts though.

For reference, here is their old logo, with their mascot.

Take Care Down There

Planned Parenthood is taking an interesting approach to sex ed on the internet now. The website has an 80’s school notebook look, and the videos are surprisingly funny. At first I thought the whole thing was a gag, but now I don’t know.

Dorky Web Stuff

How to easily install apache, mysql and php in OSX

If you click there, you can install apache, mysql and php really easily on your computer. So, for those of you who use php, you wouldn’t have to get a server with php in order to test a website. This is especially useful with blog software like Wordpress. Basically, with php, you have to use a web server that has this thing called mysql, which basically holds certain pages for you as database pages. If you were to create a website traditionally, you’d have to create one HTML page for each page on the site, but with php, you can create template pages, and certain other features that can appear frequently on the site without re-coding them.

It’s useful for updating, because, if you make a change on something that appears on every page in your site, if you did it the old fashioned way, you’d have to update ALL the pages one by one. For those of you that have used Dreamweaver, you can create template pages in that program, but every time you change a template page, you have to upload the entire site.

Anyway, this free program makes all this stuff easier, so you can spend more time designing!

Site finished

I posted this here a long time ago, so I thought I’d post to the finished (or at least published) site.

BathHouse Hypermedia Journal
www.bhjournal.com

Edited by current Creative Writing graduate students at Eastern Michigan University, BathHouse promotes interdisciplinary and hybrid arts with a special emphasis on language and innovation. We are interested in art that blurs the lines of conventional form and genre.

PS: They are always looking for designers to work on various projects, so drop Sarah Smarch a line if you are interested.
